¡Punto Final! Lifting as We Rise

A Journey of Courage, Identity, and Leadership

By Alicia Miranda President, Hispanic Corporate Council of Atlanta (HCCA)

My journey has carried me from a small, quiet town in Guatemala, through the wine valleys of California, and ultimately to the heart of Georgia. I grew up shy, soft‑spoken, and often invisible. It has taken many years for me to feel comfortable not only in who I am as a technically minded woman, but also as a single mom and leader in my community.

Today, I speak confidently in front of rooms of 70+ people, lead employee resource groups, and have found myself inspiring hundreds of rising students just beginning their path in STEM.

My story is not unlike many others. What I’ve learned, though, is that many Latinos don’t talk about their journeys. If we did, we would see how much we share—our courage, our humility, and, especially for those of us in STEM, the constant search for reassurance that we truly belong.

In my engineering program, I was one of only three women graduating in a class of 150—and the only Latina. I constantly worried that I wasn’t good enough, that somehow, I had made it through by sheer luck. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and went on to build my career at two Fortune 500 companies: General Electric, where I supported Gas and Steam Turbine technologies, and Honeywell Building Automation. It took years to understand that it had always been me: my determination, my intelligence, and my resilience. Now, when challenges come, I face them knowing I can get through almost anything.

As my career progressed, I often found myself in rooms where no one stepped up to lead—so I did. I went on to manage customer relationships, technology maintenance teams, lead multiple Hispanic employee resource groups, co‑found two Toastmasters clubs, and eventually joined the Hispanic Latin Steering Committee at the Corporate level. I found joy in pouring into our Latino members, inspiring them, and watching them grow both personally and professionally. All of this while continuing my work responsibilities.

Today, in addition to my career, I serve as President of the Hispanic Corporate Council of Atlanta (HCCA), a nonprofit whose 60+ member corporations include UPS, US Bank, BlackRock, EY, The Coca‑Cola Company, Voya, and more. HCCA focuses on professional development, networking, and supporting Employee and Business Resource Group leaders across the Atlanta area. Our mission is simple but powerful: to connect professionals, strengthen our community, and help our members rise into the promotions and leadership roles they deserve.

As a Latina, it took me years to find my voice and wear my heritage proudly. Latinos are strong, humble and courageous. I’m proud to be a Latina. If you need someone to tell you: you are worth it, that it was you, that they believe in you, let it be me. I believe in you.
