College Beat: A Journey of Determination and Growth

My name is Jazelle Alvarado, and I am a first-generation Latina college student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing while competing as a collegiate soccer player. My journey has been shaped by hard work, perseverance, and the sacrifices of my family.

Jazelle M. Alvarado proudly represents Northwestern Oklahoma State University as a student-athlete, balancing academics and collegiate athletics while pursuing her dream of becoming a nurse. 2024.

Growing up in Dallas, TX, I was raised in a family that valued hard work, determination, and education. Being raised in a family with both Mexican and American influences allowed me to appreciate diverse cultures while developing a strong sense of identity and pride in my heritage. As a first-generation college student, I have faced challenges that many students may not fully understand.

There was no roadmap for navigating college applications, financial aid, or the expectations of higher education. Many times, I had to learn things on my own, seek guidance from mentors, and push through uncertainty. While these obstacles were difficult, they also motivated me to create opportunities not only for myself but for future generations of my family.

One of the biggest influences in my life has been soccer. I began playing when I was just three years old and quickly developed a passion for the sport. Soccer became more than a game; it taught me discipline, teamwork, leadership, and perseverance. Throughout my childhood and teenage years, I dedicated countless hours to training and improving my skills.

I attended Sunset High School in the Dallas Independent School District, where I balanced academics with athletics. During this time, I also played competitive soccer for D’Feeters Kicks Soccer Club, one of the premier youth soccer organizations in the Dallas area. The high level of competition challenged me to grow as both a player and a person. Every practice, game, and tournament taught me valuable lessons about commitment and determination.

One of the most memorable experiences of my soccer career was being selected to travel to Argentina through the Dallas Athletic Club program.

Representing the Dallas Athletic Club on an international stage was an incredible honor. The trip allowed me to compete against talented athletes, experience a new culture, and gain a broader perspective of the world. It was a life-changing opportunity that strengthened my confidence and reinforced the idea that hard work can open doors to extraordinary experiences.

My dedication to soccer eventually led me to Northwestern Oklahoma State University, where I continued my athletic career as a collegiate soccer player. Competing at the collegiate level has required discipline, time management, and perseverance. Balancing practices, games, travel, and coursework has not always been easy, but it has helped develop skills that will serve me throughout my life.

Today, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. My goal is to make a meaningful impact in the healthcare field by caring for others and advocating for patients. As a first-generation Latina student-athlete. I take pride in breaking barriers and creating opportunities for myself and my family. My journey has not always been easy, but every challenge has strengthened my determination to succeed. Through education, athletics, and perseverance, I continue working toward a future where I can inspire others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacle they face.
