Staying healthy is very important when you are traveling - illness or injury can ruin any trip. So before you embark on your journey, make sure to get a healthy start.

If something does go wrong with your health, it is best to know upfront what you will be responsible for and what your insurance will cover. First of all, make sure you know the rules of your health insurance policy for seeking treatment while you are traveling. If you get sick while traveling, try to find a doctor within your plan.

Aetna, for example, allows users to search for doctors across the U.S. with DocFind, a feature on the company's website.BlueCross/BlueShield offers healthcare anywhere with the BlueCard Program. According to company representatives, no matter where you are in the U.S., you are taking your healthcare benefits with you.

Kaiser Permanente, the largest HMO in the U.S., explains that you will be cared for at any hospital you go to. After receiving treatment, you can find out how much will be reimbursed from a representative and proceed from there.

United Health Care suggests that if you become sick while traveling in the continental U.S. you can just show your healthcare card, but if you are out of the country you must pay for any health services you receive. When you return, you can call the insurance company and go over the claim forms for reimbursement.

Many health problems that you might encounter on the road might not require a doctor visit at all. If you are taking medication, re-fill all your prescriptions before you leave. If possible, get the name of a pharmacy or pharmacist at your destination. With the right preparation and a little luck, you can be sure have a healthy and enjoyable trip.

Hints for good health

If jet lag bothers you, you can relieve the symptoms by drinking plenty of water, exercising and avoiding alcohol. Even if you aren't jet-lagged, you should drink enough water in order to prevent dehydration.

Avoid an upset stomach by making sure that all food is well-done (especially meat) and that vegetables have been washed. Drink bottled water while you're on the road.

Most problems can be easily remedied by over-the-counter or prescription drugs. Bring a medical kit with things you might need. Your kit should include aspirin for pain, antihistamine for allergies, antibiotics for colds, Imodium for diarrhea, antiseptic for cuts or bruises, multivitamins and Band-Aids.
