December is Safe Toys and Gifts Month |
|
|
The holiday shopping season is already in full swing for retailers as well as shoppers who are eager to begin purchasing gifts. When it comes to toys and gifts, the lowest sale price may not be the safest for children. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recent report estimates that hospital emergency rooms treated 251,700 toy-related injuries in 2010 throughout the U.S. |
72 percent of those injuries were to those less than 15 years of age. Additionally, the CPSC found that 46 percent of the estimated 251,700 ER-treated injuries occurred to the head and face area. Lacerations, abrasions and contusions made up most of these injuries. Written by Monica Brown and illustrated by Sara Palacios, Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match; Marisol McDonald No Combina explores the idea of being mixed-race. Funny and lively story about a biracial soccer-playing pirate-artist who doesn't match-and doesn't want to, Marisol McDonald has bright red hair and golden brown skin. She loves to mix up her outfits and to her they seemingly make perfect sense together.

Spice Up Your Holidays With the Sweet Taste and Aroma of Honey-Infused Ponches
This holiday season expert mixologist Deysi Alvarez teams up with the National Honey Board (NHB) to reinvent the traditional Latin American ponches of the winter holidays and introduces them with the distinctive flavor of the natural sweetener she grew up with: honey!
SPICED HONEY PONCHE
Serves 4
Ingredients:
5 tbsp honey
2 lemons
1 small piece of ginger root
½ cup white rum
½ cup dark rum
½ cup velvet falernum (ingredients and
instructions below)
½ cup soda water
Orange peel, for garnish* For the velvet falernum:
8 almonds
1 small piece ginger root
2 limes
3-4 drops vanilla
1 pinch cinnamon |
|
Juice lemons, peel and chop the ginger root into small pieces add the lemon juice and place into a juicer (if you do not have a lemon squeezer or juicer, slice the lemons in half and squeeze the juice out into a bowl. Add the ginger pieces and press firmly with a spoon). Strain and pour into a separate mixing bowl (you can reduce the spiciness by adding 1 part water and 1 part honey until you reach the desired spiciness). Add remaining ingredients and velvet falernum. Stir. Add ice and serve.
* For the velvet falernum:Crush the almonds. Juice ginger with lime juice (follow same process as above). Add drops of vanilla extract and cinnamon. Once all of the ingredients are ready, pour mix into a blender on low to high speed. Strain, store in the refrigerator.
