Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards

On June 9th, the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) announced the recipients of the Greater Washington Area Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards (HHYA) and the “Inspira” Award. Fifteen local high school seniors and one teacher were honored for their leadership in the classroom and community during a ceremony on Capitol Hill.

National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI)

The National Hispana Leadership Institute’s (NHLI) mission is to develop Latinas as ethical leaders. Latinas Learning to Lead Summer Youth program promotes and fosters the development of young college-age Latina leaders through leadership training, technical and practical experience, during a one-week comprehensive curriculum program in Washington, D.C. NHLI recently concluded the 2009 Latinas Learning to Lead program, graduating 22 young Latina leaders.

Hispanic National Bar Foundation (HNBF)

The Hispanic National Bar Foundation (HNBF) held its annual Awards Dinner at the Newseum on July 9 in Washington D.C. The event paid tribute to current and future Hispanic leaders and benefited the 2009 HNBF Future Latino Leaders Law Camp. The event also brought together over 150 attorneys, students, and corporate leaders to celebrate the achievements. The HNBF also celebrated the contributions of three Latino leaders whose hard work, dedication, and commitment have made a profound impact in the legal community. The HNBF plays an important role in the education of Hispanic attorneys and law students throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO)

The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) held its 26th Annual Conference on June 25-27, 2009 at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles, California. The largest gatherings of Latino elected and appointed officials in the nation, the NALEO Conference attracted hundreds of participants to network and discuss key policy issues affecting their constituents across the United States.

Sea Service Leadership Association (SSLA) Women’s Symposium

On June 18-19, the Sea Service Leadership Association Women’s Symposium celebrated its 22nd Annual Symposium at the Grand Hyatt in Washington D.C. This year’s theme was “Success Strategies for the Week, the Year and Your Career.” The symposium fosters education and career development, as well as provides networking and mentoring opportunities for active and reserve member of the sea services.

National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ)

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) held its 27th Annual Convention and Media & Career Expo in San Juan, Puerto Rico on June 24-27. The convention offered hope to many with its hands-on instruction, technology-focused theme and opportunities for unemployed journalists to reignite their careers. This year’s theme was “Evolve, Embrace and Reinvent.”
