United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC)

This year, the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) held its 19th Annual Legislative Conference on March 9-11 in Washington D.C. The three day event helped set and advance the Hispanic business agenda, laying the groundwork for further analysis and advocacy. As the keynote speaker of the event, President Barack Obama opened the conference by delivering a policymaking address on education reform and work force development to policy makers, Congressional leaders, and experts in the health, education, immigration, and health fields. Among the speakers were: Congressman Ben Luján [NM-03]; Cecilia Muñoz, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, The White House; Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart [FL-25].

On March 3rd, the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) held its annual gala event, the 2009 NCLR Capital Awards in Washington D.C. This year NCLR honored U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D–MA) and U.S. Senator Mel Martinez (R–FL) with a 2009 NCLR Capital Award for their support of and commitment to policy issues critical to Hispanic Americans. NCLR also presented the Capital Award for Public Service to Miami Workers Center for its role in mobilizing the Latino community during the 2008 presidential election. The event brought together appointed officials, Hispanic leaders, community activists, executives from Fortune 500 companies, philanthropic leaders, and scholars to honor members of Congress from both sides of the aisle for their outstanding support of public policies that are vital to Hispanic Americans.
