The 2008 Elections and the New Administration

¡Punto Final!

LATINA Style Magazine celebrates this year its 15th year anniversary. Much has changed since our humble beginnings in 1994. Latinas have made significant headway since then, however the dramatic downturn in the economy is proving to have a devastating impact for the times ahead. We begin the year with a new administration, a faltering economy, rising unemployment and a feeling of uncertainty that we have not experienced in our lifetimes. The incredible feeling of hope generated by the election of President Barack Obama is now tempered by the enormity of the challenge ahead of us.

Latinas throughout the country are struggling to save their homes, their 401ks, their children’s college funds and even to keep their jobs. We wake up every day to the news of massive of layoffs in practically every industry and area of the country, the future is uncertain. So how do we best prepare ourselves for the challenge? Whether you are a corporate executive, an entrepreneur or a college student, a full reevaluation of priorities is in order. This is not a storm that may be coming our way. The storm is already here. This will be a central theme of our efforts for this year. We will be producing ongoing editorial both in the magazine print and online on a financial survival guide for the Latina professional working woman.

We encourage you to send your letters and emails regarding financial issues of concern to editor@latinastyle.com so we can respond in upcoming issues of the magazine.

As we go to print we are still waiting for the U.S.  Senate to take on the confirmation vote on Secretary of Labor nominee Hilda Solis. It is a bit disconcerting that with all the turmoil in the U.S. labor market the Senate has not moved on to address this nomination yet.  We will be addressing all these issues at the LATINA Style 50 Awards and Diversity Leaders Conference this coming February 5, here in D.C. In its eleventh year, the awards and the conference held since 2004 represent the best corporate America has to offer as far as Hispanic professional working women is concerned. I hope to see a number of you there as we strategize on how to address the future challenges ahead of us. We will begin the LATINA Style Business Series in Orlando, Florida on May 9th. For a full schedule please visit our website, www.latinastyle.com.

In our continuing series on recent arrivals we are pleased to introduce you to a new incoming Latina leader, Ms. Alexa Sofía Hinojosa Lizárraga, Born on October 9, 2008 in Washington, D.C. to Gina Lizarraga and Octavio A. Hinojosa Mier . I am sure that she will be making her impact felt very soon.
