Smithsonian Latino Center Legacy Awards

On the evening of September 18, 2008, the Smithsonian Latino Center hosted its third annual benefit gala, (Smithsonian con Sabor). Every year, the Center highlights a different culture with this year featuring the culture of Puerto Rico. Prominent individuals of Puerto Rican descent, artists, scholars, scientists and community leaders, whose contributions have had significant impact in the United States, were honored during the Legacy Awards Ceremony.

National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI)

On September 12, 2008, the National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) held its 2008 NHLI Fellows Graduation Luncheon at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington D.C. The Institute’s goals is to ensure that Hispanic women are in leadership positions and have the access and power to influence public policy and shape an equitable and humane society. Enhance and develop leadership abilities among Hispanic women whose commitment, contribution and dedication will help ensure a vibrant and sustainable future for the United States.

Hispanic Women of Distinction (HWOD)

The Hispanic Women of Distinction held its 7th annual luncheon on August 15th at the Signature Grand in Davie, Florida. With more than 800 attendees, 12 Latinas from the Broward, Dade and Palm Beach County and the 2008 Latina Pioneer of the Year were honored. This year’s theme was Community, Culture and Charity with recognition to Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart who presented the Latina Pioneer of the Year Award to Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI)

On September 7-10, 2008 the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) held its Public Policy Conference themed The Power to Make the Difference at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in D.C. This year, CHCI also hosted the Reyes of Comedy Night on September 9th and held its 31st Annual Gala on the evening of September 10th celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.
