Need a Backup System or Extra Storage Space?

A virus set loose in your computer system can destroy your data, resulting in the irretrievable loss of valuable information, whether this means an important business presentation or hundreds of cherished family photos. An external hard drive can help avert this disaster. External hard drives are located outside of the computer and connected with a cable; they are used to back-up information so that if the data is destroyed in the first location, it can still be retrieved from the second one. Portability is also another benefit; portable flash drives are a reliable secondary memory device, but they do not have nearly as much storage space as external hard drives. You can tailor which hard drive you choose depending on how much data you need to store, but the important thing is to protect your information.

Iomega
Iomega offers a variety of portable hard drives that are USB-powered. Also available are external hard drives for the home, to store photos and music, as well as more professional desktop hard drives with heightened security measures for the workplace. The memory space available ranges from 160GB to 1.5TB depending on the model and its intended function. All of the drives are compatible with both PCs and Macs, although some were designed with a specific audience in mind. For example, the hard drives for “creative professionals” target Mac users who want speed and high performance, and even a little more “style.”

Seagate/Maxtor
Seagate Technology uses an interesting feature called SafetyDrill in its Maxtor OneTouch product series. The SafetyDrill has the ability to almost instantly restore a computer’s files, giving full access even when the computer is threatened. Maxtor OneTouch is a great option for protecting data and maintaining information security. The Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus and the Maxtor One Touch 4 Mini have two levels of security: encryption and decryption, in addition to the Maxtor DrivePass, a feature that restricts access to data. Storage capacity ranges from 80GB, the lowest available for the OneTouch 4 Mini, to 1TB, the highest available from the OneTouch 4 Plus.

Verbatim
Verbatim’s SmartDisk Portable Hard Drive can be accessed in two ways: USB and FireWire. This means that it is operational whether connected to a PC or a Mac, and files can be transferred between the two systems, making this hard drive a versatile asset. The transfer speed for USB connections is up to 480MB per second, and for FireWire connections it is up to 400MB per second.

Toshiba
Toshiba’s USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive has 320GB of available storage, which translates into up to 91,000 digital photos, 84,000 MP3 music files, 142 hours of DVD videos or 37 hours of high-definition videos. The NTI Shadow™ software included greatly simplifies the process of data restoration. Although designed for Windows XP, the external hard drive works with Vista as well, and is compatible with Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later.
