Movies

The sequel has arrived! Based on the best-selling book series by Ann Brashares, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 follows four girls in the summer months before their first year of college. Their lives may have branched off into separate paths, but the ties of friendship are stronger than ever. America Ferrera, of “Ugly Betty” fame, stars alongside Blake Lively, Alexis Bledel and Amber Tamblyn. Release date is August 6, 2008.

Directed by Woody Allen, Vicky Christina Barcelona focuses on two American travelers, Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) and their encounter with an artist (Javier Bardem) and his unstable ex-wife (Penelope Cruz). The free-spirited and romantic story takes place in the sensual city of Barcelona. In theaters August 15.

A story of immigration set in present-day Los Angeles, Crossing Over depicts the efforts of multi-national immigrants to become legal in the U.S. With the presidential election coming up in a few months, this film offers a closer look at one of the hottest issues on today’s political stage. The movie stars Harrison Ford, Sean Penn, Ray Liotta and Ashley Judd. In theaters August 22.


Books

Four sisters receive unusual gifts from a dying woman whom they viewed almost as a grandmother. The Gifted Gabaldón Sisters, by Lorraine López, is told from multiple points of view, as the sisters take turns with the narration. If you enjoyed “How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents,” by Julia Alvarez, then pick up this intriguing book for a good summer read.
 

Mexican Enough: My Life between the Borderlines is a story of identity and self-discovery. Biracial author Stephanie Elizondo Griest tells of her childhood along the Texas-Mexico border as well as an eightmonth cross-country trip through Mexico in 2005-2006. Along the way, she introduces her readers to characters that provide a backdrop to the political issues currently surrounding the U.S.-Mexico border.

Follow Milagro Marquez through her senior year of high school among Mexico’s elite. Her chaotic life in Mexican High is marked by drugs, sex, and political corruption, as well as a desperate desire to discover her father’s identity. Author Liza Monroy based her debut work on her own high school experience in Mexico City.


Kids’ corner

Sweet Dreams/ Dulces Sueños, written by award-winning author Pat Mora and illustrated by Mexican artist Maribel Suárez, is part of the bilingual “My Family/Mi Familia” book series. The story’s soothing lullaby rhythm will have young children sweetly dreaming in no time.
 

Award-winning Chicano poet Francisco X. Alarcón teams up with colorful illustrator Maya Christina Gonzalez in presenting Animal Poems of the Iguazú/ Animalario del Iguazú. The Iguazú Waterfalls, located in northeastern Argentina, are surrounded by a tropical abundance of animal life, beautifully captured by Alarcón and Gonzalez in this collection of poetry.

Young readers will delight in following Quinito as he encounters sets of opposites—young and old, rainy and sunny, quiet and loud—in his world of day and night. Quinito, Day and Night/ Quinito, día y noche, is written by Ina Cumpiano with illustrations by José Ramírez.
