  • This year, the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has appointed 12 women to its Board of Directors, becoming the chamber with the largest Latina representation in the nation. The board members include: Mari Garza Bird, CDM, principal; Gloria Andrade-Merrell, Andrade Business Consultants, LLC, owner; Gisela Girard, Creative Civilization-An AguilarGirard Agency, COO; Martha I. Lara, Consulate General of Mexico; Hope Andrade, TxDOT, Commissioner; Dya Campos, H-E-B, director of Public Affairs; Jeannette Flores Westbrook, Broadway National Bank, senior vice president-CRA officer; Norma Martinez Lozano, AT&T, senior vice president-Merger Transition; Sonya Medina, AT&T; Cristina Gonzalez, Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP, partner; Cynthia Muñoz, Muñoz Public Relations, L.L.C., president; Patricia Stout, The Alamo Travel Group, Inc., president.

  • Mónica Talán has joined Univision Communications Inc., a Spanish-language media company as vice president of Corporate Communications. She will be responsible for managing media relations efforts, the company’s strategic communication, and promoting Univision’s market-leading assets. “I am delighted to join the Univision team and look forward to building on the excellent reputation that the Company has garnered in the industry at this exciting time. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue my work with the Hispanic community with a company that is clearly the leading player in the media landscape,” she said.

Denise Maes

Established lawyer Denise Maes has been named chairwoman of the Denver Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Maes is a partner at Berenbaum Weinshienk & Eason, PC in Denver, Colorado. She practices environmental law, land use regulation and litigation. “It’s an honor to be chair during this, our 30th year in promoting the interest of Hispanic businesses,” says Maes. “With a foundation solidly laid in the years passed, I am hopeful that 2008 will hold great successes for the DHCC.”

Along with her post at DHCC, Maes, a New Mexico native, is also involved in many civic activities. She was appointed to the Denver Board of Water Commissioners and is now in her second term, making her the first woman to serve as president in the Board’s more than 60 year history. Additionally, she is also president of the Board of Mi Casa Resource Center for Women, Inc., a non-profit community group whose mission is to promote economic self-sufficiency for primarily low-income Latino women and girls and has served on the Mayor’s Latino Advisory Council in Colorado.


Carmen Sigler

Dr. Carmen Sigler has been selected as board chair of The Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley (HFSV), a public organization focused on investing resources into the local Hispanic community. Born and raised in Argentina where she received her undergraduate degree, Sigler then earned A.M. and Ph.D. degrees in Romance Languages and Literatures from the University of Michigan.

“Dr. Sigler is a highly-regarded and respected community leader who has made great contributions to the HFSV since joining the board in 2001,” says Teresa Alvarado, HFSV executive director, who announced Sigler’s promotion.

She is currently provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at San Jose State University, where she oversees seven colleges, the University Library, and several research and administrative offices. In addition, Sigler also serves on the board of trustees of Montalvo Center for the Arts and Opera San Jose. She is a member of the Downtown Rotary Club, the First Act Catalyst Team and the San Jose Public Art Master Plan.


Maggie Rodriguez

With more than 15 years of journalism experience, Maggie Rodriguez joins the cast of CBS The Early Show as co-anchor. Originally from Miami, Rodriguez remains proud of her Latin roots. “My Cuban-American roots make me who I am. My personality, my values, my customs and my languages are all a direct result of my heritage,” she says.

“After my first show, I received a number of e-mails from fellow Latinas who expressed pride in having one of their own in this role,” she adds. “I will do my best to represent them well every day.”

In addition to co-anchoring The Saturday Early Show since June 2007, Rodriguez has reported for and substitute-anchored the weekday edition of the broadcast. She also has reported for the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric and substitute-anchored the weekend edition of the CBS Evening News.
