As this year comes to an end and we prepare to celebrate the Holidays, it will be a bitter-sweet celebration for our community. The challenges we are facing are some of the most serious in a long time. As an example, the failure of Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform has left local municipalities with the task of creating their own “immigration law.” The results have been dismal and challenges to the courts keep mounting. For us at LATINA Style, the year came and went in a whirlwind of activity.

In 2008, we will be celebrating the 10th year anniversary of the LATINA Style 50 and the LATINA Style Business Series. It seems only yesterday when our late founder Anna Maria Arias launched these programs in 1998. They have grown to become two of the most respected initiatives in the Latina professional community. Over 17,000 Latina business-owners have gone through the business series program and the evaluation of the top corporations for Latinas to work for in the U.S. is the No. 1 source of employment opportunities for Latinas. Much has changed in 10 years and we will be providing a full retrospective during the LATINA Style 50 Awards and Diversity Leaders Conference on February 7, 2008 here in D.C.

In this issue we launch our Automotive Update column. It will be accompanied by an online component that will help you decipher the options, the colors, the financing and all those little things that will enhance your bargaining power before entering the dealership.

Never forget

Raising children with special needs seems an impossible task, full of sorrow and obstacles. However, for those brave parents who are actually doing it, the experience is also a source of great joy and spiritual fulfillment. We are also proud that our Salute to Latinas in the Military Awards continues to grow with the support of the Department of Defense and the U.S. Marine Corps. The keynote speaker during the awards ceremony in September was Brigadier General Angela Salinas one of the true leaders in our community and our country. Her message of honor, commitment and hard work provides us with an example that we all should try to emulate.

The Latina Salute to fallen soldiers that took place during our awards luncheon was an incredibly moving event. This Salute is a powerful reminder of the many Latinas and Latinos lost on battlefield, defending our country. Their absence will make it hard for families to celebrate the Holidays. Make sure we keep them in our prayers.

Finally, we invited the leading political candidates of the Democratic and Republican party to submit a column outlining their priorities for the Hispanic community should they be elected. Senator Clinton, Senator Obama, Governor Richardson and Governor Romney responded. I hope their comments help you in making your decision. No matter what party you support make sure you vote. Latinas are the key in getting the vote out. This time we need it more than ever!

Feliz Navidad, festividades y un prospero Año Nuevo.
