National LATINA Symposium

“Celebrating Latinas in the Global War on Terror” at the 4th National LATINA Symposium

The National LATINA Symposium culminated with an awards ceremony dedicated to celebrate Latinas in the Armed Forces. One of the many highlights of the day was the distinguished service awards presented to six Latinas serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Each one of them were recognized for their contribution and dedication in the military service. Hosted by the U.S. Department of Defense, this year’s awards luncheon was themed “Latinas in the Global War on Terror,” designed specifically to highlight the contributions Latinas make and bring to light the efforts the Department of Defense undertakes to include the participation of Latinas. Among the attendees were several branches of the military, representatives from the Joint Chief of Staff, members of congress, as well as influential Hispanics from across the country.

Ms. Famia Magaña, director of Equal Employment Opportunity Defense Logistics Agency served as Mistress of Ceremonies for the luncheon, and special remarks were given by Mr. Michael Dominguez, principal deputy for the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense. After special remarks were given and the memorial tributes were held, attendees enjoyed lunch and networked throughout the room. This year, Brigadier General Angela (Angie) Salinas of the United States Marine Corps, the highest ranking Latina in the corps, served as the keynote speaker and shared her story of valor, dedication and duty in serving the country while in service for her country. “I am so humble to be in the same room where many are the best and the brightest,” she said. “I congratulate the recipients.”
