Ten outstanding Latina entrepreneurs from across the nation were recognized for their leadership, hard-work and commitment to our community. The event was made possible through the generous sponsorship of ExxonMobil, United HealthCare, Wal-Mart, Intel, Continental Airlines and the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation as our partner organization. Each of the award winners will receive a grant of $5,000. The 2008 Awards Gala will take place on the evening of the National LATINA Symposium on September 5th in Washington, D.C., mark your calendars!

This year we also celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the National Hispana Leadership Institute. Throughout the years, NHLI has distinguished itself as the premier leadership development program for Latinas in the nation. We wish them continued success.

If you ever wondered if Latinas are making progress, take a look at what Patti Solis Doyle has been able to accomplish. We knew her when she was a special assistant to then First Lady Hillary Clinton. Today, Patti is the first Latina ever to become the campaign manager of a contending presidential candidate, an awesome responsibility. If Senator Clinton were to gain the presidency who knows where Patti will be next.

Margaret Spellings, the U.S. Secretary of Education has been charged with the enormous responsibility of providing direction to the nation’s educational system. For Hispanics with one of the highest drop-out rates in the nation, education continues to be a top priority. If you have not yet picked up a copy of “Leading between two Worlds,” Rosario Marin’s journey from a poor neighborhood in Mexico to becoming the 41st Treasurer of the United States, please take the time to do so.

Election time is here. We are encouraged by the diversity the Democratic field is showing. We were curious about what these three candidates, Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Barack Obama and Governor Bill Richardson have in mind for the role the Hispanic community in our country’s future. Republicans in the meantime are still looking for their front runners. We will be covering them in our next issue. In the meantime, one thing is certain; you must register and we must vote. Make your voice count!
