Association of Hispanics Organized to Raise Awareness (AHORA)

On September 19, 2007, the American Express Hispanic Employee Network, AHORA (Association of Hispanics Organized to Raise Awareness), kicked-off its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with its 5th Annual Hispanic Expo, under the theme AHORA Y SIEMPRE! Now and Forever!. The event was held at the company’s headquarter office where more than 3,000 employees enjoyed a large-scale exposition and had the opportunity to speak with representatives from a variety of Hispanic businesses, enjoy free food, music, live entertainment and a drawing for prizes.

Hispanic Women’s Corporation’s (HWC)

On September 13-14, the Hispanic Women’s Corporation (HWC) held its 22nd National Hispanic Women’s Conference in Phoenix, AZ. The conference, one of the largest gathering of Latinas in the nation, aims to motivate and educate Latinas in the areas of career opportunities, professional development and information on social issues Latinas face today. The event offered a one-day Youth Leadership Conference for Latina high school students targeting approximately 400 local-area school students. This year’s theme was “Latina Power!”

Hispanic Women of Distinction (HWD)

On August 17th, Hispanic Women of Distinction (HWD) held its 6th annual luncheon in Davie, Florida. With more than 800 attendees, the luncheon provided opportunities for the Latinos to showcase fashion and design. Also12 Latinas were recognized for their work and commitment in the Latino community. In addition, the annual Latina Pioneer Award was presented by Erwin M. Vasquez, M.D. founder of Viva Broward! and County Commissioner Diana Wasserman Rubin to Dr. Isabel Diaz, age 90, a pediatrician who arrived to the shores of Miami in a wooden boat to begin a new life of freedom.

Hispanic Women Network of Texas (HWNT)

The Hispanic Women Network of Texas (HWNT) celebrated its 21st anniversary August 10-11 in Dallas. The event was a meeting place for Latina leaders, entrepreneurs, authors, and corporate professionals. Each one of them provided insights on the social and economic advancement of Hispanic women. Speakers and distinguished guests included: Kathleen Leos, assistant deputy secretary and director to the Office of English Language Acquisition in the U.S. Department of Education, Nina Perales, senior legal counsel at MALDEF, and Grace Lieblein, highest ranking latina engineer at General Motors. This year’s theme was “The Latina Symposium-Health, Education and Leadership.”

California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce (CHCC)

The California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce held its 28th annual Convention & Business Expo on August 22-25 in Long Beach, CA. With over 21 business workshops, attendees had the opportunity to network and receive insightful information from executives, and authors such as Linda Pinson, best-selling author of “Anatomy of a Business Plan,” Sallie Salinas, director of the Institute for Women Entrepreneurs, to name a few. Also they were able to meet key representatives from Microsoft and Yahoo to learn about emerging business trends and business technology.
