As we go to press, the immigration debate is fast and furious moving through Congress. Although at this point the outcome remains uncertain, we hope that a compromise can be reached and that a bill is presented to the White House for President Bush to sign. One thing is certain; there will be a lot of very angry people on both sides of the isle. With every Hispanic organization in the country throwing their hat into the debate, lets hope that there is a bill we can live with. Another thing is certain; emails, phone calls and letter to your congressional representatives can make a difference. Get on the wagon and lobby your member of Congress.

Our Latina spotlight shines on Maria Contreras-Sweet, a true leader who knows the importance of giving back to her community. With a stellar career as a corporate executive, a government senior official and now as the founder and chairwoman of the first Latino-owned bank in California, Promerica Bank, she has demonstrated her commitment to the advancement of the Hispanic community.

Do Latinas excel in math and science? Ask Grace Lieblein, the highest-ranking Latina at General Motors (GM), a global vehicle chief engineer. She is an example of a Latina who broke barriers in her career to enter a male-dominate field and then went on to excel in her work. We congratulate Cristina V. Beato, M.D., who was recently appointed to deputy director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), regional office of the World Health Organization and France A. Cordova, who has been selected as the 11th president of Purdue University. What an accomplishment!

U. S. Secretary of Labor
Elaine L. Chao

We should not forget to mention one of the most accomplished women to have ever served in the federal government; the Honorable Elaine L. Chao, our Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor. She is a shining star in charge of keeping America’s labor force at optimum performance. Her exceptional work has been one of the positive achievements of the Bush administration.

Our guest author is Juana Bordas, the president of Mestiza Leadership International and the first president/CEO of the National Hispana Leadership Institute. Her work as a facilitator, mentor and leading diversity expert is a must read in her new book Salsa, Soul, and Spirit: Leadership for a Multicultural Age.

Finally, the Cuban American National Council (CNC) celebrates 35 years of service. Throughout these years they have emerged as one of the most prominent Hispanic service groups in the nation. Under the leadership of Guarioné M. Diaz, their work has been instrumental in providing opportunities to the Cuban American community. We wish them continued success!
