LATINA
Style Business Series Draws Over
200 in Albuquerque
The LATINA
Style Magazine
Business Series drew over 230
guests at its first visit to
Albuquerque on May 12. The
popular series that has visited
over 60 U.S. cities was opened
by Albuquerque Mayor Martin
Chavez and featured an
impressive group of presenters
and speakers.
The series was co-sponsored by a
number of local groups including
the Hispanic Women’s Council,
the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber
of Commerce and the New Mexico
8(a) Association.
Women in attendance came from
all walks of life including
business owners, corporate
employees, federal employees,
teachers and a group of students
from Bernalillo High School.
Women were given tips on how to
start their own businesses, grow
their existing businesses,
improve their credit ratings,
locate capital, establish
partnerships with federal and
local government and take on
leadership roles in their own
environments.
The luncheon keynote speaker
Maria Marin wowed the crowd and
was wowed herself. “I haven’t
felt this kind of electricity in
any of the events I have been to,”
she said.
Then launched into a dynamic
presentation on getting what you
need out of negotiating, another
long time friend of LATINA
Style Magazine was luncheon
moderator Carla Aragon, who is a
local television anchor who
spent time in Los Angeles before
returning back to her home state.
The honored entrepreneur was
Jeanette Candelaria, owner of
Greeting, Inc. a full service
bulk mail operation.
Tina Cordova, president of
Queston Construction served as
chair of the event. Both Maria
Elena Alvarez, publisher of
Prime Time Monthly News and Anna
Muller, president of NEDA
Business Consultants served as
co-chairs of the event.
In this era of heightened
awareness regarding the impact
Latinas are having on the
economy, the LATINA Style
Business Series is among the
most successful business
development conferences.
According to Robert E. Bard,
president of LATINA Style
Magazine, Latinas are outpacing
all other business startups
three to one.
The series’ goal is to further
empower Latina professionals and
business owners by bringing them
together with key corporations
and agencies that provide goods,
services and essential
information needed in today’s
competitive environment.
Albuquerque was the 55th city
since the inception of the
Business Series in 1998. Over
10,000 Latina business-owners
have participated in this
program nationwide.
Some of the Albuquerque
highlights included a discussion
on Access to Capital led by
venture capitalist Kim Sanchez
Rael, with Fly Wheel Venture
Capital. Certified public
account Valerie Borrego brought
home the important first steps
in starting a business.
The final and most exciting
panel Latina Entrepreneur:
Lessons Learned featured women
with a wide range of experience
and years in business. Moderated
by publisher Maria Elena Alvarez
the discussion delved into
conventional and unconventional
practices. The key point was
that genuine passion and
determination are the main
ingredients to succeed.
