As we uncover the rich history and culture of Hispanics in the U.S. and abroad, I cannot help but reflect on the character of the many Latinas who have made a difference. The impact, past and present, on our culture in the areas of literature, education, business, mathematics, science and more, are tremendous.

Incredible women like the late Nobel Prize winner Gabriela Mistral, whose poetry of compassion, love and protection of children, echo loud for women today. Gloria Molina, chair of the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, whose leadership as the first Hispanic woman to serve in that position has not only touched the Latino community, but her influence reaches beyond color lines and borders even outside of California. Others like, Ellen Ochoa, the first Latina astronaut; former U.S. Treasurer Rosario Marin; Actress and activist Salma Hayek, who is making waves in Hollywood continues to inspire the lives of Latinas through her artistic talent. To bring it a little closer to home; Maritza Gomez Montiel, southeast region managing partner and member of the Deloitte board of directors, is an inspiration to young Hispanic women pursuing their professional dreams.

These women in their own right are trailblazers. Champions of the Latino community – of humanity. They, like many other Latinas have made an undeniable mark and have influenced and enriched our lives. One thing is certain, all the contributions Latinas have given us definitely comes from a source that many of them have drawn from to achieve success and balance. It’s a special unit where support and encouragement thrive. Where the wisdom of their ancestors is passed on and cherished. Where respect, the value of education and hard work are taught. Simply put, that unit is – the family. “Familia is the very center of Latino culture.” I admire these words of filmmaker Gregory Nava, and have seen through my own experience interacting with colleagues and friends that la familia is the very foundation of many Latinos achievement and success. The strength and resilience seen in Latino culture often reminds me of my own African American heritage, where both communities share culture, a love of family, the value of education and hard work. It is both encouraging and remarkable to see. In light of all the obstacles and triumphs made by Latinas, there are more achievements to be amassed. And looking back at the many victories already scored by Latinas, all women proudly join in the celebration. So as we continue to celebrate Hispanic heritage, no celebration is complete without a toast. I raise my glass to all the future strides Latinas will make in this country and around the world.
