As we uncover the
rich history and culture of
Hispanics in the U.S. and abroad,
I cannot help but reflect on the
character of the many Latinas
who have made a difference. The
impact, past and present, on our
culture in the areas of
literature, education, business,
mathematics, science and more,
are tremendous.
Incredible women like the late
Nobel Prize winner Gabriela
Mistral, whose poetry of
compassion, love and protection
of children, echo loud for women
today. Gloria Molina, chair of
the Los Angeles Board of
Supervisors, whose leadership as
the first Hispanic woman to
serve in that position has not
only touched the Latino
community, but her influence
reaches beyond color lines and
borders even outside of
California. Others like, Ellen
Ochoa, the first Latina
astronaut; former U.S. Treasurer
Rosario Marin; Actress and
activist Salma Hayek, who is
making waves in Hollywood
continues to inspire the lives
of Latinas through her artistic
talent. To bring it a little
closer to home; Maritza Gomez
Montiel, southeast region
managing partner and member of
the Deloitte board of directors,
is an inspiration to young
Hispanic women pursuing their
professional dreams. |
