Lynda Sandoval’s Desesperada (the English-language version is titled Unsettling) is a story of love and cold feet, focusing on Lucy Olivera, a 38-year-old police officer who isn’t as scared of the drug dealers and other criminals she comes across in her line of work as she is of settling down and marrying her fellow-police-officer boyfriend Ruben.

In La Isla de la Pasión (Isle of Passion is the English-language title), Laura Restrepo relates the story of Ramón Arnaud, a Mexican military officer who becomes governor of Clipperton island--the “isle of passion.” The Mexican Revolution, WWI, and a series of natural disasters leaves Ramón’s wife, Alicia, to head the island community.


KIDS’ CORNER

This October, Disney is re-releasing its animated film Cinderella on DVD. Everyone knows the story of Cinderella, destined to clean her evil stepmother’s house forever until she receives a visit from her fairy godmother and wins the heart of her prince in shining armor. Revisit this classic with your children.

The beloved Chicken Little story comes to animated life on the big-screen. When Chicken Little sees an acorn fall, he assume it’s the sky that is falling down. His friends are annoyed that they’ve panicked for nothing—until the sky actually does begin to fall, and it’s up to Chicken Little to save the world.


MOVIES

 

Dreamer, starring Kurt Russell, Elisabeth Shue, and Dakota Fanning, is a heartwarming drama about the effort of a father and daughter to save an injured racehorse. The film, in theaters on Oct. 21, also stars Luis Guzmán and Freddy Rodriguez.


MUSIC

Recording and television star Aracely Arambula presents her second album, Sexy, which includes fun dance-party hits such as the title song. Arambula has starred in four telenovelas, and she's on her way to the top in the music industy, too!

Xarah’s self-titled album is a real treat, with songs like “Mentiroso,” a call-to-arms for women whose boyfriends aren’t the kind you’d take home to Mom and Dad.
