LATINA Style partners with U.S. Bank to send more Hispanics to college

When colleges and universities in the United States opened their doors this year, an increasing number of the students who walked through them were of Hispanic descent. More importantly, when students turn their tassels this spring upon earning undergraduate and graduate degrees, a greater percentage of them will be Hispanic.

According to a report from HispanTelligence out of Santa Barbara, Calif., the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanics tripled from approximately 26,000 in 1985 to nearly 78,000 in 2001. They go on to say that of the 1.24 million bachelor’s degrees conferred in the academic year 2000-01, 77,745 went to Hispanics.

The trend is impressive however the statistics continue to trail those of non-Hispanics. The Census reported that 30 percent of non-Hispanic whites and 17.4 percent of African Americans completed college, compared with only 11.8 percent of Hispanics. That is why LATINA Style Magazine and U.S. Bank have partnered in a new venture that supports Hispanic students by giving them a boost where they need it most – in their pocketbooks.

The LATINA Style Visa® Platinum card, introduced in September 2005, generates money for scholarships every time that card is used. The scholarships will be awarded for the first time in May 2006, and the number and total amount will be based on the pool that is available. The more the cards are used, the more scholarships will be awarded annually.

The card is available to everyone, yet targets women, who by most industry estimates comprise one of the most powerful spending categories in the nation. Women use their credit cards to make an average of eight or nine purchases monthly, according to Mediamark Research, Inc.

Latinas also comprise one of the fastest growing segments of the working sector with seven million Latina women in the United States workforce. Latina owned businesses number nearly 600,000, employing more than 350,000 people with revenues exceeding $50 billion.

By harnessing the spending power of this population, combined with the deep seeded desire to see the next generation learn, achieve and succeed, we believe the LATINA Style card will bring tremendous new opportunities for students entering college or returning to college to further their education.

The card is equally rewarding in the short-term as it is in the long-term through the investment in scholarships. Cardholders are also rewarded for every purchase and may choose their reward category – be it travel, merchandise or other rewards – accumulative with every $1 spent using the card. The card has no annual fee and offers a low introductory interest rate on purchases and balance transfers for six months, with certain conditions and exclusions.
