As part of its 2005 Media Summit in Washington, D.C., the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP) presented its 2005 Latina Publisher of the Year Award and Latina Journalist of the Year Award at the summit’s Latina Publishers Luncheon on June 9. Winners were Clara Reyes, publisher of Dos Mundos newspaper in Kansas City; and Adriana Sanchez, a reporter for La Voz in Phoenix, Ariz. Reyes was recognized for excellence in publishing, with over 24 years of service to the Hispanic community; in addition to the Publisher award, she received the Anna Maria Arias Award and $5,000 to sponsor an intern in her office. Sanchez was recognized for her journalistic work; in addition to the Journalist award, she received the Anna Maria Arias Award and $2,000.

NCLR
The National Council of La Raza hosted its 2005 Annual Conference July 8-11 in Philadelphia, Pa. Over 25,000 community leaders, activists, elected and appointed officials, students, and members of corporate, philanthropic, and academic communities attended the schedule of workshops, exhibits, forums, and an awards gala. Workshops included “Mental Health and Latinas,” “Improving Health and Housing for Farmworkers,” and “Afro-Latino Youth Leaders: Ethnicity and Culture as Catalysts for Community Organizing,” to name just a few. Among its many featured speakers were Congressman Bob Melendez, U.S. Treasurer Anna Escobedo Cabral, and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Race for the Cure
On June 4, over 47,000 people, including almost 3,700 breast-cancer survivors, ran and walked five kilometers on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., for the 16th annual Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation National Race for the Cure. The event raised over $3 million for breast-cancer research, education, and screening and treatment programs.

100 Hispanic Women
100 Hispanic Women presented its 2005 Orgullo Latino Awards, recognizing “exemplary Latina women who through their work and contribution personify models of excellence in leadership.” This year’s honorees included Elizabeth Vargas, an anchor on ABC’s 20/20; and Syliva Montero, senior vice president of human resources at Pfizer. Miguel Fuentes, president and CEO of Bronx Lebanon Hospital, received an honorable mention. The event was hosted by television journalist and host Lynda Lopez and featured a performance by the cast of the Broadway musical The Mambo Kings.

NHLI
The National Hispana Leadership Institute graduated another class of young Hispanic women from its Latinas Learning to Lead Summer Youth Institute, held July 10-16 in Washington, D.C. The one-week program combines leadership training with technical and practical experience. 2005’s class includes Ivet Aldaba, Guenny Barriga, Brenda Bautista, Miyenu De Montis, Mirtha Lizette Estrada, Teresa Grado, Mariana Kihuen, Lynna Martinez, Melissa Montoya-Torres, Maria Luisa Parra-Sandoval, Ana Perez, Gisel Ramos, Aisha Rivera, Carolim Rivera-Rosario, Alejandra Rodriguez, Leticia Rodriguez, Selina Gallego Rodriguez, Daisy Talavera, Lynn Thomasson, and Rocio Villalobos.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) held its 76th Annual National Convention & Exposition at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock, Ark., June 27-July 2. The thousands of attendees included top leaders in government, business, and the Hispanic community. Speakers and featured guests included actress Lupe Ontiveros, U.S. Treasurer Anna Escobedo Cabral, recording artist Gloria Estefan, Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, and former President Bill Clinton, who emphasized the need for greater cooperation and understanding among minority communities.

NALEO Educational Fund
The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund held its 22nd Annual Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, June 23–25. The conference, the largest of its kind, offers “a premier opportunity to network and discuss key policy issues affecting Latinos across the United States.” Workshops included “Obesity: Our Community in Crisis” and “Financial Literacy: A Pathway to the American Dream,” with panelists and speakers such as New Mexico Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron, Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez, and U.S. Associate Assistant Deputy Secretary of Education Kathleen Leos.

WBENC
The Women’s Business Enterprise National Council’s (WBENC) national conference and business fair was held June 28-30 at the Las Vegas Convention Center and MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. The conference, the largest event of its kind in the United States, gathered 2,000 women-owned business suppliers, corporate and federal-government buyers, and corporate leaders for three days of networking activities, workshops, and keynote addresses, including one by TV producer and life coach Nely Galán. This year’s conference, the sixth annual, was titled “Women in Business 2005: Sharing the Vision (Contacts to Contacts).”
