HCF Scholarship Awards

The 11th annual Hispanic College Fund Scholarship Awards Gala was held Thursday Oct. 7, 2004, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. The event honored 45 of the 670 talented Latino students who received a total of $1.8 million in scholarships in 2004. The reception audience of about 450 included corporate supporters, scholarship donors, and Latino leaders. The Hispanic College Fund awards need- and talent-based scholarships annually to deserving Hispanic students with the mission of developing the next generation of Hispanic professionals in the United States.

15th Annual Las Primeras Awards
On Oct. 7, MANA, A National Latina Organization held its 15th Annual Las Primeras Awards Gala. The black tie event, themed “Honoring Latina Achievement,” was held at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., and was sponsored by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Las Primeras honors groundbreaking Latinas in various careers and fields, and is one of the cornerstone events of Hispanic Heritage Month, drawing an audience of close to 300. Award recipients included: for community service, Jane Garcia, co-founder of Corporate Responsibility through Advocacy; for leadership, the Honorable Alma L. López, chief justice of the Fourth County of Appeals in San Antonio, Texas; and for public service, the Honorable Patricia Madrid, New Mexico Attorney General.

Mujer Awards Gala
The National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) hosted its 12th Annual Leadership Training & Mujer Awards Gala on Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club in Orlando. The Awards Gala celebrated the human rights work of two Latinas: Marjorie Agosin, the award-winning Chilean poet, human rights activist and professor at Wellesley College; and Adelfa Botello Callejo, an attorney and activist. Keynote speakers included stockbroker and best-selling author Julie Stav; critically acclaimed author and successful entrepreneur Deborah Rosado Shaw; and Dr. Antonia Novello, the former U.S. Surgeon General and current New York State Health Commissioner.
