National
Hispana Leadership Institute Graduation
The National Hispana Leadership
Institute (NHLI) concluded its 2004
program with a week in Washington, D.C.,
and a graduation luncheon. The NHLI
program consists of four week-long
sessions in different locations across
the country, each focusing on a
different topic. The final week in
Washington, D.C., was entitled
“Impacting Decision-Makers and National
Policy,” and explored policy development
and the legislative process through
meetings with Congressional
representatives and national leaders.
The session began Sept. 12 and ended
with a graduation celebration on Sept.
17.

Hispanic
Scholarship Fund Alumni Hall of Fame
Gala
On Oct. 6, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund
(HSF) held its annual gala, inducting
five Latinos into its Alumni Hall of
Fame. The gala, held this year at the
Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, D.C.,
illustrates the power of higher
education by recognizing Latino role
models for future generations of
Hispanic college students. Among the
2004 inductees were Maria Vidal de
Haymes, a professor at the Loyola
University of Chicago; Cecilia Lozano, a
high school English teacher in Oklahoma;
and Alexandra Chirinos, a Harvard
University law student.

Hispanic
Heritage Awards
The Hispanic Heritage Awards on Sept. 10
honored six Hispanic leaders at a
star-studded ceremony at the John F.
Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in
Washington, D.C. Among the honorees were
Sandra Benitez, who received the award
for literature; and Gloria G. Rodriguez,
who received the education award. The
Hispanic Heritage Awards Foundation also
presented seven young Latinos with
Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards,
including Alana Kim Dong (Community
Service), Jennifer Lugo (Journalism),
Jonathan Julio Jourdane (Academic
Excellence), Sandra Valenciano
(Healthcare), Vanessa Perez (Sports),
Edward Ramos (Engineering & Mathematics)
and Jairo Alvarado (Arts &
Entertainment). |
