2004 Wow! Facts

On July 14, the Business Women's Network (BWN) and Diversity Best Practices celebrated America's new demographics with the unveiling of the 2004 WOW! Facts and WOW! Quick Facts in the Senate Russell Caucus Room in the nation's capital. Among the many distinguished guests and speakers was U.S. Congresswoman Grace Napolitano of California. WOW! Facts has distinguished itself over the years as a strategic business tool that provides over 15,000 diversity statistics. 2004 is the inaugural year of WOW! Quick Facts, a condensed version of WOW! Facts that compiles the most commonly requested statistics and information in a smaller and more practical format.

Hermanitas Summer Institute

National Latina Organization, MANA, held its Hermanitas Summer Institute from July 15 through 18 at the Crown Plaza in Arlington, Va. The three-day leadership institute is geared toward college-bound Latinas, covering a broad range of topics from healthy self-image to financial responsibility with the goal of providing young women with an understanding of the social and academic aspects of the college experience.

MANA, A National Latina Organization, held its Hermanitas Summer Institute in July in Arlington, Virg. The program prepares young Latinas for the college experience.

75th LULAC Annual National Convention & Exposition

July 6 through 10 marked the 75th Annual National Convention and Exposition of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), held in San Antonio, Texas. The convention draws over 9,000 people every year, including the top leaders from government, business, and the Hispanic community. Guests this year included Tommy Thompson, Richard Carmona, Rebecca Vigil-Giron, Ciro Rodriguez, Raul Yzaguirre and Henry Cisneros. It featured satellite addresses by President George W. Bush and Democratic Presidential Candidate John F. Kerry. 

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) held its 75th Annual Convention in July in San Antonio. The Convention drew over 9,000 participants.

NAHP Media Summit

At its annual Media Summit this year the National Association of Hispanic Publication (NAHP) announced the winners of the Latina Publisher and Latina Journalist of the Year Awards. NAHP recognized contribution to the empowerment of Hispanic print and to the well-being of the Hispanic community. The winners were recognized for their achievements at the July 10 Latina Publisher's Luncheon, where keynote speaker Congresswoman Grace Napolitano addressed the audience. NAHP presented the awards to Norma Máximo, publisher of El Águila del Hudson Valley in White Plains, NY; and Valeria Fernandez, reporter for La Voz in Phoenix, Ariz. The luncheon was moderated by Clara Padilla, the NAHP Latina and Media Summit Committee Chairwoman and publisher of El Hispanic News. 

21st NALEO Annual Conference

The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) held its 21st Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. on June 23 to 26. The event, which honors Hispanic leaders and elected officials for their outstanding contributions to the Hispanic community, featured influential Latino speakers including Congresswomen Hilda Solis, Lucille Roybal-Allard, Linda Sánchez and Grace Napolitano; Texas State Senator and president of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators Leticia Van de Putte; and Darline P. Robles, the superintendent of the Los Angeles County Office of Education.

NCLR Annual Conference

The National Council of La Raza (NCLR) hosted its Annual Conference in Phoenix, Ariz. on June 26 to 29. The conference, which is the largest gathering of its kind in the Hispanic community, included a Latinas Brunch called "Sister Act Dos: Following Your Passion" on July 29. It featured an informal conversation about work, family and community between influential Latinas. Panelists included Janet Murguia, the executive director and COO of NCLR, the Honorable Mary H. Muguia of the U.S. District Court of Arizona, Congresswomen Loretta Sánchez and Linda Sánchez, comedian Jackie Guerra, and Denisse Oller, a Univisión news anchor.

Latinas Learning to Lead

The National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) held its weeklong leadership program, Latinas Learning to Lead, July 11 to 17. Developing the young Latina leaders of the future through leadership training, professional development, relationship building, and community and world activism, the Leadership Institute enables Latinas across the country to become part of a powerful network of Hispanic leaders and builds their insight into public policy issue affecting the Latino community.
